Vibrant and historic, Mainz captivates from the first step with its prime location on the banks of the Rhine and its atmosphere that blends Roman legacy, innovation, and a deep wine culture. As part of the Great Wine Capitals network, this German city putsRheinhessenon the global map, offering not only history but also a perfect escape to the gentle hills covered with vineyards.

A living heritage on the banks of the Rhine

Founded in Roman times, Mainz is famous for being the birthplace of Johannes Gutenberg, who revolutionized the world with the printing press. Its imposingSt. Martin's Cathedral, which has dominated the skyline for over a thousand years, is an icon alongside picturesque half-timbered houses, lively squares, and cozy taverns. TheMainz Carnival, one of the most important and joyful in Germany, transforms the city into a festival of parades, music, and joy that begins in January and attracts visitors from all over the world.

Rheinhessen: The largest wine region in Germany

Rheinhessen, with its26,500 hectares of vineyards, is the largest wine-producing region in the country. Bordered by a large blue bend of the Rhine, its fertile soils and dedication toorganic viticulture–in which it leads nationally– give life to wines of great character and complexity.

TheRieslingit is the star: aromatic, floral, and generally dry, with a delightful minerality influenced by the soils. The classicSilvanervarieties, white Pinot and red varieties such asSpätburgunder (Pinot Noir), Dornfelderand Merlot that adapt to climate change. A refreshing tradition is theWeinschorle, a mix of white wine with sparkling mineral water, ideal for summer.

Wine tourism around the corner

The best thing about Mainz is that the vineyards are literally steps from the city. You can reach the wineries by walking, biking, or through guided tours that traverse the rolling hills. Hundreds of kilometers of hiking and cycling trails offer stunning views, especially in autumn when the vineyards turn red and gold.

The wineries, with their characteristic hospitality, open their doors for tastings where you can chat with the winemakers – many of them young innovative talents. The local cuisine perfectly complements: try the creamySpundekäs, smoked sausages, coq au vin, or the tasty fish from the Rhine, all paired with the region's wines. Cruises on the Rhine, breakfasts at the weekly market, and cultural events at wineries enrich the experience.

From Casablanca to Mainz-Rheinhessen: two regions, one passion

InCasablanca, we share with Rheinhessen that passion for expressing the terroir and developing authentic and accessible wine tourism. While our Casablanca Valley stands out for its fresh and vibrant white wines thanks to the Pacific breeze (unforgettable Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay), Rheinhessen impresses with the minerality and elegance of its Riesling alongside the majestic Rhine.

Both World Capitals of Wine invite you to discover how different landscapes and climates create equally memorable experiences.
