Located on the coast of the Valparaíso Region, just 45 kilometers from our Casona, lies the picturesque cove of Quintay. This small fishing village, part of the Casablanca commune, is a destination that captivates with its rich history, its past linked to the whaling industry, and its current appeal that combines nature and culture.

From artisanal fishing to the whaling industry

Quintay emerged around the year 1900, when fishermen from localities such as Algarrobo, El Quisco, and Valparaíso settled on its shores, attracted by the abundance of marine resources. Last names like Araya, Campos, Bernal, Farías, Concha, and Sepúlveda were among the first to populate this area, establishing a community that thrived thanks to the sea.

In 1943, the history of Quintay took a significant turn with the construction of a whaling plant, which operated until 1967. During this period, the plant became the largest in the country, employing nearly a thousand people and processing up to 16 whales daily.

However, overexploitation led to the decline of cetacean populations and, eventually, to the closure of the plant. Today, the facilities of the former whaling station have been restored and operate as a museum that invites reflection on this chapter of Chilean history.

Nature, gastronomy, and culture

After the closure of the whaling station, Quintay returned to its fishing roots. The fishermen's cove is the heart of the village, where artisanal fishing remains the main activity. Many residents have opened restaurants by the sea, offering the best of Chilean coastal cuisine. Strolling through the cove is a delightful experience, with the sound of the waves, the sway of the boats, and the aroma of fresh dishes inviting you to indulge.

The crystal-clear waters of Quintay are ideal for diving and snorkeling, especially around the old whaling station. Some say that Quintay offers the best conditions in Chile for diving.

For those seeking tranquility, a swim in the sea or a walk along its beaches are perfect options to enjoy the scenery.

One of the main attractions is Playa Grande, an extensive stretch of white sand and clear waters that extends for a kilometer. This place is perfect for disconnecting and enjoying nature at its finest.

In addition, Quintay has undergone significant modernization. In 2009, the cove was equipped with a crane to facilitate the entry of boats into the sea, and an advanced digital communication system was implemented that allows fishermen to coordinate and protect themselves during their work thanks to GPS technology.

The Quintay cove is a gem that combines history, culture, and nature. Its culinary offerings, picturesque atmosphere, and the warmth of its people make it an ideal destination for those looking to escape the hustle and bustle of the city and connect with the essence of the Chilean coast.
